Why is the AFLW not popular?

Got a burning question about Australia or Australian lifestyle and culture? This is the place to ask thousands of Australians!

Why is the AFLW not popular?

Like many Australians I've been enjoying watching the FIFA Women's world cup recently on TV.

But it got me thinking, Australians clearly like to support women's sport. This World Cup has been breaking records for tickets sold and attendance, there's been sold out or near sold out stadiums of 80,000. People are talking about the games and the Matildas everywhere I go. Many of these players are basically household names.

Then there's other events, like the T20 Womens ICC world Cup which also broke records for attendance for female sport.

And yet... no one seems interested in AFLW. I've personally been to about 5 AFLW games and I always had a good time but the stadium felt like a zombie wasteland. It was just so empty. Even when the tickets were free entry there was never more than a small handful of people in the crowd.

Why is this? Too new of a sport? Not enough support/marketing by the AFL? The players haven't been able to hone their skills yet so they aren't as interesting to watch?

What if anything do you think can be done to increase interest in this sport?

Why do you/don't you watch AFLW?

My girlfriend started playing footy this year, so I've been watching about 3 games a week. It's a great way to get your footy fix after the mens finish. The quality of games is much higher than a few years ago. More footy can only be a good thing!

Regarding AFLW

The AFLW season has started and we once again need to address the quality of some of the comments and posts we've seen in the last two days.

Firstly, let me be absolutely clear, AFLW threads belong on this subreddit, as does anything else relating to Australian rules football.

If you are not interested in the content, do not wish to view or discuss women's football, or have no interest in news about women's football, that is your prerogative. The threads discussing those things are not the place for you then. There is no need for you to make derogatory and demeaning comments. There is also no need for posts on how you think women's football should be, which turn out to be digs at women's sport. You can simply hide AFLW posts or ignore them, as you can with all posts in Reddit.

We will quite happily delete comments, ban and otherwise discipline users who continue to behave in a manner that breaks Rule 1.1. If you want to know what type of behaviour breaks Rule 1.1 in this instance I point you to our preamble which states, "r/AFL is a positive and friendly place for insightful and interesting discussion and banter in good spirit." If you comment doesn't live up to that sentence, I advise you not to post it.

Future .self posts about how the AFLW could be improved will be treated with strict scrutiny and the bar for removal will be low.

Please do not engage with trolls and users who act in bad faith. Report the comment and/or send a modmail. No one ever changed their mind because they lost an internet fight.

Special thanks to the GWS social media team who's tone and phrases I used for this ^^post.

Edit: u/Shardomy has a method to filter AFLW posts on computer, on old Reddit, using filter here.

How could the AFLW improve?

Amidst all the conservative snowflakes crying that people kick football bad, how could the AFLW actually improve?

I think the first change would be making players professionally paid. This would open the door for a longer season and longer game duration. Importantly it’d be a huge step to make the draft non-state based (I believe it still is state based, someone fill me in)

Also, I understand there is still quite a bit of inequalities with training facilities, including a team during mid-season having to make way for their men’s teams’ pre-season. That’s unacceptable and steps should be taken so it doesn’t happen again.

Would like suggestions in good faith, thanks

Edit: for what it’s worth I’m a fan of the league
